Textile Entrepreneurs Urge Acceleration of IEU-CEPA Ratification PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 20 September 2019

The Indonesian Textile Association (API) urges government to immediately complete the Indonesia - European Union Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (Indonesia European Union Comprehensive Economic Agreement / EU CEPA) to improve penetration capabilities of Indonesian textile textile products so that they are no less competitive with Vietnamese textile products.

The Indonesia EU CEPA negotiations, which began for the first time in 2016, are now in the eighth round. Indonesia EU CEPA is projected to drive the growth of Indonesia's gross domestic product (GDP) up to 0.5% per year and increase the value of exports up to US $ 1.1 billion or grow 5.4% per year.

API Chairperson Ade Sudrajat said, Indonesia EU CEPA had to be resolved immediately because Vietnam EU CEPA had been signed and effective starting January 1, 2020. The Vietnam CEPA's Vietenam enactment made a number of products including textile products exempt from import duties.

This certainly needs to be watched out for by Indonesia, which also exports textile products to EU countries. At present, textile products exported to EU countries are subject to an import duty of 11.2-31%. With this import duty, of course the competitiveness of Indonesian textile products will be inferior to Vietnamese textile products.

EU countries are one of the main export destinations for Indonesian textile products. Based on data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), one of the EU member countries, such as Germany, is the third largest export destination country for Indonesian textile products in the form of apparel or convection with a value of US $ 372.48 million in 2018.

The first and second place is occupied by the US and Japan with a value of US $ 3.78 billion and US $ 740.9 million, respectively.

"The settlement of Indonesia EU CEPA is expected to be accelerated, because it will have a wide impact on our expansive export plans. Vietnam with Vietnam EU CEPA is ready early next year. Vietnam is a strong competitor of Indonesia for now, "said Ade.

Based on API data, the export value of Vietnam's textile products as a whole has reached US $ 37.12 billion. Meanwhile, the overall value of exports of Indonesian textile products is still far below Vietnam's achievements of only US $ 13.22 billion.

"We should not be left behind with Vietnam, whose export growth has reached double digits," said Ade.

Ade hoped that the implementation of Indonesia EU CEPA could boost exports of Indonesian textile products to be able to record export value growth of more than 10%. At present, the growth in the export value of Indonesian textile products is recorded at no more than 7%.

In addition to Indonesia EU CEPA Ade said, it was also necessary to study various bilateral and multilateral trade agreements that enabled Indonesia to become a multi market sourcing platform or market from many countries. He hoped that Indonesia could study a number of countries in Asia as important trade partners and see a gap where Indonesia could improve trade relations with these countries both bilaterally and multilaterally.

"Other countries are also very progressive in conducting trade cooperation with other countries, that for the long term our exports, especially textile products which are superior and have succeeded in absorbing this workforce of 2 million workers," he said.

Meanwhile, as an effort to boost exports of textile products from the country, API specifically invited 30 global fashion brand owners to come to Indonesia and see first hand the capabilities of the Indonesian textile industry from upstream to downstream. The effort is one way to maximize, namely the 34th Trade Expo Indonesia (TEI).

The 34th TEI is the largest trade exhibition in Indonesia to be held on 16-20 October 2019 by the Ministry of Trade.

API Deputy Chairperson for Foreign Trade, Anne Patricia Susanto, explained that API will facilitate 30 global fashion brand owners to visit 11 textile factories in four provinces, Such as Central Java, West Java and Banten on 13-18 October 2019. In addition they will also be taken to Yogyakarta for a tour.

"This is our step to maximize the 34th TEI. We are holding a Trade Expo Indonesia Textile Showcase and Summit (TEITSS) or Buyer Trade Mission 2019 along with the 34th TEI so that global fashion brand owners understand what the Indonesian textile industry is like, how much it contributes to the public, they can ask questions directly about the textile industry, " said Anne
