Race against Target of Improvement of Indonesian Textile Industry PDF Print E-mail

An industrial area of 2,700 hectares is being built about 21km from the west of Semarang City (the capital of Central Java). The area will be built Kota Mode or Fashion City. Town Mode will be equipped with various facilities. Starting from the center of raw materials, shopping, exhibitions to research centers and development of textile products.

The industrial site known as Kendal Industrial Estate (KIK) is a strategic collaboration between PT Jababeka Tbk, with Singapore investment giant Temasek Holdings, which is strongly supported by the Ministry of Industry of Indonesia. To date, as many as 12 companies have entered in KIK with a total of 20 hectares of land already sold. The investors are from Indonesia, Singapore, Netherlands and Japan

With this industrial estate, the government hopes to boost the domestic industry. The development of this industrial estate is also to improve the development and competitiveness of national textile and textile industry (TPT).

Ultimately, the effort will increase the value of exports, making the products of the country's industry to host in the country and included in the ranks of the world's top five exporter countries. That is the target to be achieved from the industrial sector according to Minister of Industry Airlangga Hartarto.

The government's active step is evident from the establishment of TPT industry as one of the sub-sectors in the processing industry categorized as strategic industry and national priority. Thus, the Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) initiated a mapping of potential assessed policies in boosting the national textile industry exports.

Based on Kemenperin records, in February 2016, the value of textile industry exports rose by 6.81 percent compared to the previous period (month on month). TPT industry is considered very potential because it is supported by textile production activities that have been integrated from upstream to downstream, even the products are also known to have good quality in the international market.

"We will encourage the national textile industry to produce non-woven products. This is part of product diversification strategy as well as expansion of export marketing, "said Minister Airlangga, quoted from Antara.

Until now, TPT industry has also helped to absorb the workforce of 3 million people with investment value reached Rp8, 45 trillion. In addition, the contribution is significant to the country's foreign exchange earnings with export value reaching 12.26 billion US dollars in 2015 with an average growth of 2.28 percent over the past five years.

Therefore, the industry is considered capable of expanding export markets to various countries in the world. Because the market share of Indonesia's textile industry in 2015 is only 1.5 percent of the world textile market. Has a margin of 34.1 percent with the leader of the global textile market that China controls up to 35.6 percent. However, at least Indonesia can compete with Vietnam whose position is above Indonesia which controls 1.7 percent of the world market.

While the destination country of textile industry exports namely the US in 2014 reached $ 3.75 billion and European countries such as the Netherlands, France, Germany, Begia and Italy. The growth prospect of national textile industry is also considered to be better in the future due to the increasing domestic market demand and the increasing of world consumption.
