New Hope for Exporters of Products to Australia PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 24 April 2019

On March 4 the Indonesian Government represented by the Indonesian Minister of Trade Enggartiasto Lukita and the Australian Government represented by the Minister of Trade, Tourism and Investment Simon Birmingharesmi officially signed an agreement with the Australian Government named (IA-CEPA) Indonesia - Australia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement in Jakarta.

This agreement is a long journey after quite long negotiations, namely 9 years.

"Basically (IA-CEPA) will be very beneficial for both countries. Not only increasing trade but also investment, services. We will get the advantages of aspects of education, training, and several other things," said Enggartiasto.

"So this is historic for both countries. We hope that this (the value of trade, investment, and services) will immediately increase," he continued.

In this signed agreement, Indonesia will cut import duties by 94% for Australian products in stages. For Indonesia itself, Australia will remove the import duty of 100% for products from Indonesia

In addition, Indonesia also has facilities in the services trade sector. Such as the increase in work and vacation visa quotas, ie from 1,000 visas to 4,100 visas in the first year of IA-CEPA implementation and will increase by 5 percent in the following years.

In addition, Indonesia also received a program to increase Human Resources (HR). Such an apprenticeship program is based on the needs of the Indonesian industrial and economic sectors, but is directly related to Australian investment in the vocational education sector.

Of course this is a breath of fresh air especially in industries in the automotive, textile, electronic and ceramic sectors.

In the textile sector itself, with the signing of this agreement, Indonesian entrepreneurs will be better able to compete with Malaysia and Vietnam which have already been exempted from import duties.

This program can certainly be one of the factors that can encourage the Indonesian economy and certainly can be a tool to accelerate Indonesia from developing countries to developed countries. To be an advanced country, of course, the main benchmark is the economy of a country, the economy of a country can develop, of course, apart from infrastructure developments that facilitate economic activities but also must pay attention to the quality of human resources in the country.

Indonesia is planned to become a developed country in 2045, but this can happen more quickly if such agreements continue to be signed by our government with foreign governments so that the Indonesian economy can continue to grow and the quality of Indonesian human resources continues to increase.
