Cotton Prices are Rise, Polyester Availability is Limited PDF Print E-mail

International cotton prices have increased. Based on Bloomberg data, the price of cotton on the ICE Futures in New York for delivery in March 2011 is on the level of U.S. $ 1, 59 per pound. Rising cotton prices was triggered by a decline in world cotton supplies from several countries producing cotton crop failures due to rainfall is quite high in 2010, and disrupt the productivity of cotton crop.

Chairperson of the Indonesian Textile Association, Ade Sudrajat said, now is actually several small-scale textile industry already exist that stop production due to rising raw material prices. If the increase in cotton prices is not addressed, then Ade worried textile industry is currently being excited again lackluster.

"The decline in the growth of new industries will be felt in the year 2012, because this year the producers have prepared a shopping engine and new investments for 2011," said Ade.

Actually, one alternative that could be followed by the textile industry is to do a transfer of raw material cotton to synthetic fibers such as polyester and rayon. However, until now export synthetic fibers has not been regulated by the government, so that the polyester is still much to be exported.

Ade said, which is a concern when the price of cotton rose entrepreneur is the availability of polyester instead of cotton is also more limited. Actually, last November API has sent a letter to Secretary of Commerce to limit exports of products such as polyester fibers and other fibers. This is to ensure the availability of raw materials in the country. However, until now has not received a response letter from the Ministry of Commerce.

Of national synthetic fiber production capacity of 1.2 million tons, 70% of it is absorbed to meet the domestic demand. Therefore, Ade expect the government to do anticipate to find a way out short-term to maintain continuity of supply of raw material for textile industry. "The government should immediately react to adopt temporary rules (temporary) related to export policies polyester, 'clear Ade.

President Director of PT Asia Pacific Fibers Page (POLY) Vasudevan Ravi Shankar said the rising price of cotton, of course, will drag the price of polyester. "Due to the increase in world cotton prices, the producers began to switch to polyester as an alternative," said Ravi. As a result, polyester prices next year will also go up due to rising demand.

Ravi gave an example, in Indonesia alone, needs about 40,000 tons of polyester per month. "If cotton prices increase, demand for polyester can take at least 10%," he said.

Harga Kapas Naik, Ketersediaan Polyester Terbatas

Cotton Prices are Rise, Polyester Availability is Limited Harga kapas Internasional mengalami peningkatan.

Direktur Utama PT Asia Pacific Fibers Tbk (POLY) Vasudevan Ravi Shankar mengatakan kenaikan harga kapas tentu saja akan menyeret harga polyester.

“Kalau harga kapas naik, permintaan polyester bisa naik setidaknya 10%,” ungkapnya.
