The European Union agreed to start free trade talks with Indonesia in line with the wishes of the bloc to boost economic ties to Asian countries. These positive developments achieved after the EU Commission President, Jean-Claude Juncker, and European Union Trade Commission, Cecilia Malmstrom, talking with the President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, in Brussels, on Wednesday (20/4).

"We've agreed on yesterday, the preparatory discussions for a comprehensive economic cooperation agreement and it is good news for Indonesia and the European Union," said Juncker.

Comprehensive Economic Partnership (CEPA) is already designed since 2011. This deal will free up trade in goods and services as well as investment opportunities and procurement for the Indonesian market.

In an effort to strengthen ties with ASEAN, the EU has agreed on free trade agreements with Singapore and Vietnam. In order to counterbalance the United States that began sweeping Asia, the EU is also aiming Indonesia.

Jokowi himself said that the free trade agreement is in line with the policy of the Indonesian economy is now more open and competitive.

Indonesia export more agricultural products, fuels, minerals, textiles, and semi-finished goods to EU member states.

Meanwhile, the EU's main exports to Indonesia is a high-tech machinery, transport equipment, manufactured goods, chemicals, and processed foods.

During the meeting, also discussed plans to immediately implement a Trade License, and the Forest Law Enforcement Governance (FLEGT). This license is expected to be enacted in recognition of the trade legal and sustainable timber.

Through a statement quoted on their official website, the EU ensures that the alliance is now important that the procedure can run for Indonesia FLEGT license can be immediately operated.

"When the procedure is completed, the Joint Implementation Committee may recommend the date imposed FLEGT license," wrote the EU.

When a license has been applied, all wood-based products in the list of Annex I of the VPA imported into the EU must be equipped with the official FLEGT. Unit License Information Indonesia will monitor this license and share information to stakeholders and the authorities in the EU.

"Excise officer in Indonesia will check the license before the product out of the country. The EU customs officer will refuse entry Segal products in VPA arrived without official FLEGT license," wrote the EU.

Uni Eropa Akan Bahas Perdagangan Bebas Dengan Indonesia
