The Minister of Industry of Airlangga Hartarto admitted that the government is continuously working to make Indonesian textile and textile products (TPT) competitive in the global market. To that end it will try to press import duty TPT to US and EU (EU).

"We must finish the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with America and Europe because the import duty is higher than other countries," Airlangga said after the halal bihalal event in his office, Jakarta.

As is known, Indonesian textile products exports to the EU and US are subject to 10-17 percent of import duties, while Vietnam and Bangladesh are 0 percent. The difference in the amount of import duty, allegedly because Indonesia is considered a developed country because it is incorporated with G20.

Airlangga said if trade negotiations with the US and EU can be resolved quickly, he is optimistic that the textile industry can record better performance in the next quarter.

The ministry noted that the growth of the textile and textile products industry in the first quarter of 2017 only slightly increased by 0.03 percent compared to the same period in 2016. Meanwhile, the export value of this sector in January-May 2017 has reached 5.11 million US dollars. The number increased 3.40 percent over the same period in the previous year.

In general, the government targets the labor-intensive sector to grow 1.6-1.8 percent in 2017, up slightly from the previous year's only 1.2 percent.

Agar Produk Tekstil Masuk AS-UE, Pemerintah Indonesia Berusaha Tekan Bea Masuk
