Cotton demand for textile industry raw material in Indonesia every year continues to increase. Chairman of the Indonesian Textile Association (API), Ade Sudrajat, said almost 100% of cotton for textile industry raw materials in Indonesia depends on imports.

The reason, not easy cultivation of cotton plants in Indonesia.

"Cotton we depend on this raw material is almost 100% imported. In Indonesia cotton can grow, but there is one trait that will affect the characteristics and price and quality," said Ade met at the Cotton Day Indonesia event at the Ritz Carlton Hotel.

"Cotton when planted should require a lot of water constantly, but so fruitless baseball may be hit by water and rain, while in Indonesia it can not be predicted rain, can at any time. We've tried in Kendari and NTT.That's why we are still imported, he added.

He expressed, during this time many people of Indonesia are wrong perception related to cotton, one with kapok. The local production of cotton only meets about 4% of the national textile industry needs.

"We have to distinguish cotton and cotton, if cotton, if the cotton is small, it is often mistaken, so many imported kapok cotton (kapok) can not be spun because the oil content is high, the fiber is different, the diameter is rough, indeed if it is held smooth like kayak cotton, "explained Ade.

According to him, Indonesia's cotton import annually reaches US $ 1 billion. Most come from the United States (US), Brazil, and Australia.

"Not only from the US, we also import from Brazil, Australia, so it's the imports we've been doing, the US is ranked first but taken over by Australia and Brazil, the trend of exchange because it depends on the price, the harvest time, and the quality of each - country, "explained Ade.

Mengapa Kapas Indonesia Masih Impor?

Kapas produksi lokal sendiri baru memenuhi sekitar 4% kebutuhan industri tekstil nasional.

"Kita harus bedakan kapuk dan kapas, kalau kapuk randu, kalau kapas pohonnya kecil, itu sering keliru, kok banyak randu kapuk impor. Itu (kapuk) enggak bisa dipintal karena kandungan minyaknya tinggi, seratnya beda, diameternya kasar, memang kalau dipegang halus kayak kapas," terang Ade.

Menurut dia, impor kapas Indonesia setiap tahun mencapai US$ 1 miliar.
