Indonesia still imports cotton as textile raw material. This is due to the inability of cotton plants to grow well in the territory of Indonesia.

Ade Sudrajat, Chairman of the Indonesian Textile Association (API), said nearly 100% of industrial cotton is imported from countries such as the United States, Brazil and Australia. Current domestic demand for cotton reaches about 900,000 tons per year.

"Actually in Indonesia can grow, but the quality is not good because there are characteristics of cotton that should not be exposed to water during fruiting. In Indonesia is difficult because rain is difficult to predict," he said.

In comparison, Ade mentions that domestic cotton production per hectare is only 40% of total US cotton production in the same area. The ability to supply domestic cotton is only able to reach the highest point of 4% of the needs.

Based on data from the Ministry of Industry, nationally, cotton textile raw material needs from cotton is about 42% of all national textile production. Synthetic textiles still dominate with a range of 50%, and the rest are rayon textiles.

Meanwhile, the demand for cotton as a national textile raw material is currently not increasing because replaced by polyester and nylon whose price tends to be cheaper. Manufacturers are also more that mix cotton and polyester as textile raw materials.

Currently, the price of cotton is in the range of 52 cents pounds sterling per pound. Meanwhile, Indonesia's cotton import value reaches US $ 1 billion per year. Cotton is widely used for the production of underwear, socks, and denim.

Furthermore, Ade said that the association is proposing the exemption of import duty for apparel products to the United States when using the cotton from Uncle Sam's country, considering Indonesia became one of the largest cotton importing countries.

Anh Dung (Andy) Do, Vice Cotton Council International (CCI) for Indonesia, said Indonesia is the fourth largest market for US cotton commodities. Every year, the value of imported cotton to Indonesia reaches about US $ 400 million.

CCI as a non-profit trade association promoting cotton and cotton products from the United States under the trademark Cotton USA assesses that Indonesia's textile industry is still likely to continue to grow.

"Our growth projection is equal to the projected growth of the textile industry for this year at 3%," he said.

Produksi Rendah, Impor Kapas Masih Diperlukan

Setiap tahun, nilai impor kapas ke Indonesia mencapai sekitar US$400 juta.
