Minister of Industry Airlangga Hartarto stated that the distribution of medium and large scale textile industry is still concentrated in Java Island. "Our task is to equitable industrial population outside Java," Airlangga said in an official statement last weekend.

Industrial development in the region is a way to diversify the textile producers and the economic welfare of the inclusive society. Currently, there are already several industrial areas that have been operating, for example, Palu, Central Sulawesi; Morowali, Central Sulawesi; Konawe, Southeast Sulawesi; Bantaeng, South Sulawesi; Sei Mangkei, North Sumatra; and Dumai, Riau.

According to data from the Ministry of Industry, in 2016, the export value of textile products amounted to US $ 10.9 billion or Rp 144.3 trillion. Airlangga said the 11 percent export growth this year would reach US $ 12.09 billion or Rp 160.07 trillion and US $ 13.5 billion or Rp 178.74 trillion next year.

Thus, in 2019, the value of exports could reach US $ 15 billion or Rp 198.60 trillion with the employment of 3.11 million people. "We estimate there will be additional production capacity of 1.6 million tons per year with an investment value of Rp 81.45 trillion with employment of 424 thousand people," Airlangga said.

He explained that the textile industry has great potential to develop. Under the National Development Master Plan 2015 to 2035, textile becomes one of the priority industries in order to contribute significantly to national growth.
