“LEATHER STANDARD by OEKO-TEX®: Making safer leather choices”

On 5th October 2017, TESTEX invited leading figures of Indonesia’s leather industry to attend a one-day seminar at the Royal Ambarrukmo Hotel in Yogyakarta.

The event was well received among the approximately 90 participants of the leather and textile indus-try, the ministry of trade for leather and textiles and the school of leather technology.

The seminar offered an exclusive look at the current products of the OEKO-TEX® association, as well as market insights to the leather industry in Indonesia by local branch specialists, government officials and branch education specialists. An on scene survey conducted with all attendees also emphasised the importance of a certification standard for leather goods by the industry.

 The LEATHER STANDARD by OEKO-TEX®

In January 2017, OEKO-TEX® extended its product portfolio to include a new certification system for leather goods. The LEATHER STANDARD by OEKO-TEX® was born.

Producers and suppliers of leather goods were now able to have their products certified and tested for harmful substances. By adding the leather sector to its extensive testing and certification system, the OEKO-TEX® association responds to recent developments in the textile, leather goods and footwear markets.

Leather – an important industry for Indonesia

Based on the latest data of the Indonesian Ministry of Industry, the Indonesia’s leather industry exports about 93% of its finished products, which is expected to further increase in 2018. The Indonesian gov-ernment also supports the development of the leather industry by making necessary regulations to investments in farming, raw material import and industrial standards, benefitting the environmental friendly and sustainable production.
