Local Textile Manufacturers Need to Prepare to Face Vietnam in European Markets PDF Print E-mail

Textile industry and textile products of the country are wary of the threat from Vietnamese manufacturers who become competitors of local manufacturers in the European market in 2018.

Ade Sudrajat, Chairman of the Indonesian Textile Association (API), said that textile and textile products (TPT) industry is hampered by the import duty to Europe which reaches 15% -20%. The problem can be a serious obstacle for the national textile industry because it can significantly reduce sales next year. The EU market is still contributing significantly to the total export sales of TPT industry in Indonesia.

This condition is inversely proportional to the manufacturer of TPT Vietnam who get special treatment such as exemption of import duties and various other facilities from the European Union. "The government next year should focus on fostering bilateral relations with the EU so that the TPT industry gets the same treatment with Vietnam," said Ade

The growth of TPT industry exports this year is considered to improve with sales reaching US $ 12.4 billion or better than the previous four years. The government should be able to maintain this positive trend next year in order to pursue the target growth of textile industry in 2019 which reached US $ 15 billion.

"The Indonesian government is currently working on a partnership with the European Union to free import duties. The process of discussing the import duty exemption agreement is expected to be completed until 2018, while in 2019 it has reached the ratification stage and can be implemented in 2020," he said.

According to him, the implementation of import duty exemption in 2020 can be achieved with the government's record to work harder. "Do not be delayed, this policy is crucial to the growth of export-oriented TPT industry," he added.
