Despite the decline due to decreasing purchasing power, exports of sarongs and batik products are believed to be re-wriggling. Southeast Asia is expected to be the largest market of sarong and batik products.

"This year, we expect public purchasing power to increase again due to safety and comfort, as well as good government policy in efforts to boost exports," said Secretary of the Association of Indonesian Handicraft Exporters and Producers (Asephi) Pekalongan Arief Wicaksono, in Pekalongan.

He believes, some countries in Southeast Asia will be the target of export of batik sarong from Pekalongan, Central Java. "So far, Pekalongan batik sarongs still dominate exports to some Southeast Asian countries, such as Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam," he cried.

Although consumer demand for batik sarongs has decreased slightly due to the global crisis, but countries in Southeast Asia are still the main target of batik craft product exports. In addition to batik sarong cloth, he continued, Asephi also export other handicraft products such as batik rayon and batik to a number of Middle East region, Africa, United States, Australia, and Latin America.

Strategic Program

In an effort to boost the productivity and competitiveness of SMEs batik, Kemenperin has conducted various strategic programs. Increased competence of human resources, product quality development, standardization, facilitation of machinery and equipment, and promotional activities and exhibition of batik at home and abroad.

In order to increase market access, Gati added, it has an IKM e-Smart program that works with several marketplaces. "Through this e-Smart program batik products are encouraged to enter the online market, thus having a wider market reach as it can be accessed by consumers from various regions," he said.

Ministry of Industry also encourages batik craftsmen to obtain various financing facilities such as people's business credit (KUR), Indonesian Export Financing Institution (LPEI) and other incentives to strengthen their capital structure.

"Thus, it is expected that the national batik industry can grow significantly and its competitiveness increases," he added.

Gati hopes, the development of national batik industry can be run in collaboration between the government with academics, business actors, and community.

"This is very important because each stakeholder has a different role, so with this synergy the development of national batik industry will be integrated and sustainable from upstream to downstream," he said.

Minister of Industry Airlangga Hartarto also said that batik industry has developed into an environmentally friendly business sector. This is in line with the increasing use of natural dyes on the wastra cloth.

It also makes batik as a product of high economic value, even with the development of natural dyestuffs also reduce the importation of synthetic dyes.

"Therefore, we continue to encourage the crafters and researchers to continue to innovate to get various variants of natural colors to explore its potential, thus enriching the variety of Indonesian natural batik colors," he said.

According Menperin, amid increasingly competitive global competition and dynamic, consumer preferences of environmentally friendly products continue to increase.

"The presence of natural color batik is able to answer the challenge and is believed to increase the current market opportunities," he said.

Pengusaha Batik Pekalongan Yakin Ekspor Kembali Bergeliat

Program Strategis
