The Indonesian Textile Association called for an active role of the government to encourage the export of the two commodities to boost exports to a number of potential countries after a downturn in February 2018.

Chairman of the Indonesian Textile Association (API) Ade Sudrajat said a number of factors led to a decrease in exports occurring in some countries related to trade barriers. As he exemplifies such as the determination of import duties by the EU and the United States for textiles since the last few years between 11% -17%. Though the country became one of the largest export markets.

This condition resulted in demand for these products every year decreased. Not to mention the Vietnam and Bangladesh some time ago has agreed on free trade with the two regions. Both countries are currently no longer required to pay import duties after establishing cooperation. This makes the Indonesian market increasingly lagging behind.

"In addition, the presence of India who participated in this sector to make competitors in the international market more crowded," said Ade.

According to Ade, American and European exports amounted to US $ 4 billion and US $ 1 billion in 2017. This figure is said to be below 50% for total exports. Even so the pedestal must be transferred to a number of other potential countries. Because some countries such as South Korea and Japan show a pretty good progress with 6% growth in 2017. Although the value of trade is still below the two traditional markets, Japan and Korea remain believed to be a good potential after RI has a free trade agreement.

The government must take several steps to increase exports by completing the European Union - Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement which has been running for about three years. Negotiations with the EU are expected to make import duties less or even eliminated. Although considered too late, these talks are believed to be boosting export of textile products.

"Then for the exhibition mat must be based on the request of entrepreneurs not based on the wishes of the government. Because exporters know better which markets are potential, "said Ade.

Ade does not want to set export growth target in 2018. If there is no pro-government effort, it is believed that RI's exports of apparel products are declining. Meanwhile, the export growth of textile products in 2017 rose 6 percent to 12.5 billion and grew from US $ 11.8 billion in 2016.
