The development of the cellulosic or rayon fiber industry will strengthen the domestic textile and textile industry (TPT) which has contributed US $ 12.4 billion to state revenues by 2017.

The Ministry of Industry has paid special attention to rayon fiber as a supporter of the domestic textile industry, as its production capacity continues to increase from 200,000 tons or 8.7% of total world production in 2004 to 250,000 tons equivalent to 11% of the world's total production.

Rayon is cellulose type cellulosic filament (CF) textile material obtained from the extraction of soluble pulp fiber or dissolving pulp.

Textile industry actually has known rayon as artificial silk with excess fabric look more lustrous and not easily tangled. Currently rayon fiber is widely used as bedding, clothes, towels, wet wipes for babies, masks, and other hygiene products.

Indonesia has a comparative advantage in the rayon industry, because the trees that become rayon raw materials only require 5 to 8 years to be harvested. This is different from timber trees in nontropical countries that require 25 to 80 years to harvest.

Edy Sutopo, Director of Forest Products and Plantation Industries at the Ministry of Industry, said that the need for dissolving pulp currently reaches 400,000-500,000 tons per year, all of which are met from imports.

"With its comparative advantage, Indonesia has the opportunity to become one of the largest rayon producers in the world. In addition to bring in foreign exchange, this industry has the opportunity to be one of the pillars of national economic growth, "he said.

Raw material

The domestic textile industry is currently facing the problem of raw material supply, especially the fibers that will be spun into yarn and then woven into fabric.

In fact, TPT is one of the national strategic industries because it contributes greatly to the state revenue. Last year, textile exports reached US $ 12.4 billion, up about 4.4% compared to 2016 which reached US $ 11.87 billion.

Word Bank also placed Indonesia in the top 20 as a textile exporter country by 2015, with export product share reaching 6.31% globally.

Currently, synthetic fibers such as polyester and nylon become the most used raw materials of domestic textile industry with 51% share, while cotton fiber has 37% portion and 12% rayon.

Central Data Mediatama Indonesia (CDMI) recorded the import of Polyester Staple Fiber (PSF) Indonesia in 2013 of 134,143 tons worth US $ 41.09 million, and increased to 153,376 tons worth US $ 171.69 million in 2017.

As for cotton fiber, 99% of domestic demand reaching 500,000 tons per year is still obtained from imports, due to low domestic cotton fiber production capacity of only 5,000 tons per year.

United Nations Commodity Trade Statistics Database 2017 noted Indonesia was ranked 5th as a fiber importing country after China, Vietnam, Turkey and Hongkong.

The data also shows that the majority of Indonesian cotton fiber imports come from the United States, Brazil, Australia and India.

Ade Sudrajat, Chairman of the Indonesian Textile Association (API) said the average imports of domestic cotton reached US $ 1 billion per year.

Meanwhile, Bruce Atherley, Executive Director of Cotton Council International (CCI), said the driving factor of cotton fiber demand is the increasing consumption of clothing and other fasion products by young Indonesians.

The development of rayon industry can actually be one of the solutions to support the national textile industry which is currently difficult to obtain raw materials.

Industri Tekstil Rayon Perkuat Kemandirian

Tahun lalu, ekspor TPT mencapai US$12,4 miliar, naik sekitar 4,4% dibandingkan dengan 2016 yang mencapai US$11,87 miliar.

Ade Sudrajat, Ketua Umum Asosiasi Pertekstilan Indonesia (API) mengungkapkan rata-rata impor kapas dalam negeri mencapai US$1 miliar per tahun.
