Rupiah Weakens, Textile Entrepreneurs Increase Selling Prices PDF Print E-mail

The weakening of rupiah against the US dollar (US) also affected domestic textile and garment industry. Chairman of the Indonesian Textile Association (API) Ade Sudrajat Usman explained, production costs had risen so entrepreneurs had to increase selling costs by up to eight percent.

Ade said that the price increase had been in effect since Monday (3/9) when the rupiah had touched Rp. 14,800 per US dollar. Price increases apply by almost all textile and garment entrepreneurs in Indonesia.

Production costs to run the business are increased in terms of raw materials and electricity which are also paid for using the US dollar. Although he did not mention the percentage increase in costs, Ade said that the increase was quite significant.

Of all textile and garment entrepreneurs, those who are domestic market oriented are the most affected parties. Because, they have to buy raw materials from abroad in US dollars, while sales are in rupiah.

Meanwhile, for export-oriented industries, there will not be too much problem. Because, in buying and selling, they use the US dollar.

However, this does not mean that export-oriented entrepreneurs can be ignorant of current conditions. Some industries may obtain exchange differences, but not how much compared to the tax burden received. With high raw material prices, margins are getting smaller.

Ade still cannot predict whether the increase in selling prices will continue.

If the ability to buy the community can go up, the garment and textile industries can be generous. Conversely, if the ability of consumers cannot go up, entrepreneurs are in trouble.

The rupiah exchange rate transacted between banks in Jakarta on Monday (3/9) afternoon weakened by 126 points to Rp 14,815 compared to the previous position of Rp 14,689 per US dollar. One of the causes is economic turmoil in Turkey and Argentina which also weighs on the currencies of developing countries, including Indonesia.

Rupiah Melemah, Pengusaha Tekstil Naikkan Harga Jual
