Grows 8.7%, Muslim Clothing Becomes the Main Product of Indonesian Textile Exports PDF Print E-mail

The government targets Indonesia to be one of the world's Muslim fashion center in 2020. The Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) holds  Indonesia Moslem Fashion Expo as part of a strategy to realize this ambition.

Minister of Industry Airlangga Hartanto said, the fashion industry is one of the strategic sectors and national priorities. This business sector generates foreign exchange with an export value of US $ 8.2 billion as of July this year or grew 8.7% on an annual basis.

As of July 2018, products from domestic fashion industry only controlled 1.9% of the world fashion market. The Ministry of Industry wants to increase this market share so that its contribution to the national economy increases. The strategy adopted is to boost  growth of startups in this field.

Therefore, the Ministry of Industry initiated the Modest Fashion Project (MOFP) program which took place from April to June 2018. The finalists of the Muslim fashion design competition were then fostered, both in terms of financing, production, and marketing.

MOFP results were exhibited at the Indonesia Moslem Fashion Expo at the Ministry of Industry office on October 1-6 2018. This Muslim fashion exhibition was the first to be held.

Competitiveness is an important aspect along with the expanding market of Muslim fashion products. One of the drivers is the increase of Muslim population in Indonesia and the world. The Global Islamic Economy predicts that  value of global Muslim fashion market in 2020 will reach US $ 327 billion.

The Minister of Industry believes that Indonesia is able to become a global Muslim fashion center. Especially considering the population of Indonesian Muslims as the largest in the world, at least 200 million people.

In addition, Indonesia is one of the top five members of the Organization of Islamic State Cooperation (OIC) which is the world's largest Muslim fashion exporter. OIC countries besides RI are Bangladesh, Turkey, Morocco and Pakistan.

Only, entrepreneurs still face problems with access to finance. One of the winners of MOFP Cut Beleun, for example, claimed that he had never had access to credit to expand his business.

In addition to financing, the brown-skinned woman stated that coaching to market access is needed especially by young designers.

The spotlight on the Muslim fashion subsector also came from the Creative Economy Agency (Bekraf). In August 2018, Bekraf Financial Club was held which involved around 50 bank representatives and non-banking capital providers.

The Head of Bekraf Triawan Munaf stated that the field of fashion business is prospective. Throughout 2016, this sector contributed around 56% of the total value of creative economy exports.

Based on data from the Central Statistics Agency, the fashion sector is one of the main contributors to the creative economy's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2016. The share is around 18.01%, equivalent to Rp 166 trillion.

Tumbuh 8,7%, Busana Muslim Jadi Andalan Ekspor Tekstil Indonesia

Hanya, pengusaha masih menghadapi masalah akses pembiayaan.
