Stages of Businessman Reduce Import Materials PDF Print E-mail

Business people are beginning to anticipate fluctuations in the rupiah exchange rate in 2019, one of which is by reducing dependence on imported raw materials. Secretary General of the Indonesian Association of Fiber and Yarn Producers (APSyFI) Redma Gita Wirawasta exemplifies the efforts made by producing substitutes for imported raw materials domestically.

Redma said that it was also to meet the additional needs of raw materials to supply fiber expansion and polyester filament yarn carried out by other members. Thus, next year targets to have an additional capacity of 300 thousand tons of rayon fiber.

He continued that this effort is expected to support the growth of domestic textile industry. "We hereby hope that the downstream industry will reduce imports, so that it will not be disturbed by fluctuations in the exchange rate." According to Redma, the most important thing for businesses is the stability of exchange rates, with a range of fluctuations of no more than 2 percent.

The threat of minimizing risk of exchange rate volatility next year is also carried out by automotive manufacturers. Director of PT Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN) Bob Azam said in short term company will make efficiency and delay investments that are deemed unnecessary. "In the long term, we continue to carry out localization to substitute imported goods and reduce the import portion," he said.

Bob explained that currently there are three things that are trying to be developed domestically by TMMIN, namely components, tooling, and material. "But even though the components are local, there are actually many materials that are actually imported," he said. In percentage terms, the value of the local component, he said, reached an average of 80-90 percent.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Indonesian Food and Beverage Entrepreneurs Association (GAPMMI) Adhi S. Lukman said another option chosen to anticipate the more expensive rupiah exchange rate next year, was to stock up on imported raw materials earlier.

"Our estimates for next year will be in the range of IDR 14,500-15,000 per US dollar, still above this year so we also need to review prices at the beginning of next year," he said. Moreover, in addition to the world business challenge rate next year, Adhi said, there was an increase in provincial minimum wages (UMP) and plans to increase logistics costs due to a reduction in fuel subsidies.

Tahapan-tahapan Pelaku Usaha Kurangi Bahan Impor
