Minimum Work Wage Increases, A Number of Companies in Bekasi Prepare to Leave PDF Print E-mail

After the approval of the Bekasi Regency Minimum Work Wage (UMK) of Rp.4.1 million, a number of companies in industrial areas in the area are preparing to leave.

"At the end of the year there are textile companies that will sell their assets. Because they assess the wages and production produced are not balanced," said Chairman of the Indonesian Employers Association (Apindo) Bekasi Sutomo

According to him, the event of selling the company's assets was not  first thing that happened. Because  before, there were several large companies in Bekasi Regency that had already left.

The event of departure of company was not the first time it happened. Before, companies like Toshiba, Sony and Sanyo had already sold their assets. They prefer to leave because of the high costs associated with production.

"There is no balance between the income received by the company and expenditure," he said.

Sutomo explained, current market competition is very fierce. Thus, a number of industries must take into account the cost of production. Moreover, the MSEs set for workers in the Bekasi Regency area reached Rp.4.1 million in 2019.

"If the cost of production is already expensive, they are clearly looking for a cheaper area and the company's income is not balanced," he said.

Sutomo said, on average, the company wanted a guarantee of regulatory comfort from the government. Because, if it is not realistic to run production, they would rather look for other areas that have regulatory certainty.

"In 2017 there were five textile companies leaving. Right now there are companies that will leave," he said.
