2030, Indonesia enters the Top 5 Textile Manufacturers in the World PDF Print E-mail

In accordance with the map of Making Indonesia 4.0, Indonesia is targeted to enter the ranks of the top five textile and textile products (TPT) producers in the world by 2030. To make this happen, the government prioritizes the development of  textile industry as a pioneer in the roadmap for implementing the fourth industrial revolution.

Mudhori, Director of the Textile, Leather, Footwear and Multifarious Industries of  Ministry of Industry, said that the implementation of industry 4.0 is believed to strengthen the global competitiveness of the TPT sector because it increases product efficiency and quality.

"This sector is classified as competitive because it has been integrated from upstream to downstream, and is supported by large human resources to support production activities," Muhdori said

In the era of industry 4.0, Muhdori continued, almost all industrial sectors inevitably had to start implementing high operational standards and sustainability. This 4.0 era must be oriented to automation, internet of things, 3D printing, machine-to-machine and human-to-machine communication, and artificial intelligence.

According to him, the industrial era 4.0 is a necessity, as well as the challenges and needs of the textile industry to be more efficient, while continuing to improve HR competencies in accordance with technological developments.

As an export-oriented labor-intensive sector, Mudhori said, the textile industry has contributed significantly to the national economy.

Based on the Ministry of Industry's records, textile and textile product exports have continued to increase in recent years. In 2017, the contribution of the TPT sector to gross domestic product (GDP) reached Rp150.43 trillion, while exports were US $ 12.58 billion, up 6% from the previous year.

Raw Material Guarantee

The Secretary General of the Indonesian Synthetic Fiber Manufacturers Association (APSyFI), Redma Gita Wirawasta, said that rayon materials are more in demand for fashion compared to other textile materials.

"Indonesia has the potential to become one of the largest rayon industry players in the world, supported by extensive land availability and a supportive climate. This condition makes Indonesia superior comparatively compared to other rayon producing countries," said Gita.

Gita stressed that the continuation of the rayon fiber industry requires continuous raw material supply through industrial plantations.

"Rayon plants supported by industrial plants not only strengthen the structure of the textile industry, but also reduce dependence on imported raw materials which have been the issue of national textile competitiveness. The upstream industry is even able to generate foreign exchange because some of its production is exported," said Gita.

The Ministry of Industry noted, the production capacity of rayon fiber industry in the country is around 470 thousand tons in 2016. Its capacity is estimated to reach 565 thousand tons in 2017 and is targeted to penetrate 700 thousand tons in 2018.

For information, in 2019, the national rayon industry's production capacity is projected to reach 1 million tons, and will rise again to 1.2 million tons in 2021. When asked about allegations that an international organization, Canopy, stated that the source of raw materials for rayon fiber came from Ancient and Endangered forests in Sumatra and Kalimantan, Gita denied that.

"Allegations like this must be proven by them," he said.

He stressed the importance of the role of the government in supporting the development of the national textile industry.

Forestry expert Machmud Thohari also questioned the Canopy report which classifies forests using the terms ancient forest and endangered forest.
