Industry in Indonesia is currently on average at stage of initial readiness in entering the industrial era 4.0. These results are listed in the initial assessment by Ministry of Industry which will be updated with the Indonesia Industry 4.0 Readiness Index (Indi 4.0) assessment method.

The Head of the Industry Development and Training Agency (BPPI) of the Ministry of Industry, Ngakan Timur Antara, explained that he would launch an industry readiness assessment indicator in the face of era 4.0. The method called Indi 4.0 will be launched on March 20-21, 2019 at the Ministry of Industry office, Jakarta.

Ngakan explained that measurement results of Indi 4.0 would be a benchmark in identifying challenges and determining government strategies and policies in encouraging transformation towards industry 4.0.

Before launching the program, the Ministry of Industry had conducted an initial assessment of around 20 companies from five industry leading sectors 4.0. The five sectors are the food and beverage industry, chemicals, textiles and textile products, and electronics.

Ngakan explained that from the initial assessment, the industry was on level 2 on average, out of all 5 levels. Level 0 means that the industry is not ready to transform into industry 4.0, level 1 is the stage of initial readiness, level 2 stage of moderate readiness, level 3 stage of mature readiness, and level 4 means the industry has applied the industry concept 4.0 in its production.

He explained that based on initial assessment, chemical and automotive industries sector was the best sector in terms of preparation towards industry 4.0. According to him, this is based on the high automation that has been applied in both sectors.

Some obstacles to transformation towards 4.0 found by the Ministry of Industry in the initial assessment, one of which is the readiness of human resources. Ngakan assesses that this is a concern of the government so that human resource development is a priority program of the Ministry of Industry in 2019.

According to him, the Ministry of Industry has 40 assessors who have been trained to become industrial consultants. The assessors will later be sent to companies in accordance with the problems that are mastered by each assessor.

Based on McKinsey's research results, Indonesia ranks second as a country with industrial optimism in implementing 4.0, which is 78%. Above Indonesia there are Vietnam (79%), while under Indonesia there are Thailand (72%) and Singapore (53%).

Indonesia's Managing Partner McKinsey & Company, Philia Wibowo, considers that optimism is a great opportunity for Indonesia, although not all industries currently implement 4.0. According to him, this opportunity can be optimized through a supportive industrial climate and competitive human resources.

Philia also explained that 79% of industries in the Southeast Asia region had an awareness of industry 4.0. As many as 63% of industries recorded continued to increase their optimism in implementing industry 4.0.

The application of industry 4.0 itself is considered as something crucial to do. Based on McKinsey's research, the manufacturing sector will get the biggest influence from the application of industry 4.0. The sector will get an additional US $ 34 billion.
