Trade war is not one of the terms favored by the Indonesian Minister of Trade Enggartiasto Lukita because overcoming trade barriers is an effective thing to improve people's welfare.

As is known, at the moment the global economy is still threatened by conditions of trade wars which are marked by a surge in the increase in entry rates on a number of imported goods commodities, triggered by the United States government led by President Donald Trump.

The Minister of Trade himself in his first visit abroad in 2019 began with a trade mission trip to a number of cities and states in the United States, January 14-19 2019.

The locations visited were Washington DC (the capital of the United States), New York City (one of the global trade centers), and Nebraska (US agribusiness production area).

Indonesian trade with the United States is one of the essential things for the national economy. As is known, the total trade between Indonesia and the US reached 25.92 billion US dollars, a surplus for Indonesia amounting to 9.7 billion US dollars.

Total trade in the past five years showed a positive trend of 0.39 percent. In 2017, the US is the second non-oil and gas export destination after China with a value of 17.1 billion US dollars. Indonesia's main export products to the US include shrimp, natural rubber, footwear, tires and women's clothing.

In terms of imports, the US has become the fifth source of non-oil and gas imports for Indonesia worth 7.7 billion dollars. Indonesia's main import products from the US include soybeans, cotton, wheat, flour mill residues and food waste, and processed foods for animals.

In addition, the Minister of Trade also stated that this working visit was one of the strategies to achieve non-oil and gas exports which was targeted to increase 7.5 percent compared to last year or as much as 175.9 billion US dollars.

According to Enggartiasto Lukita, the working visit of the trade mission is an effort to improve export performance which must be done as early and optimally as possible amid conditions of slowing global economic growth.

He warned that this year, non-oil and gas exports were targeted to increase to US $ 175.9 billion compared to last year. In the period January-November 2018, the non-oil and gas trade balance recorded a surplus of 4.64 billion US dollars in January-November 2018.

During that period, overall exports grew positively by 7.7 percent with oil and gas exports amounting to 15.65 billion dollars and non-oil and gas exports 150.14 billion dollars.

Discuss GSP

The Trade Minister also discussed bilaterally on the implementation of "Generalized System of Preferences" (GSP) with US Trade Representative Ambassador Robert Lighthizer.

The meeting was important because the US was evaluating whether Indonesia still deserved to receive GSP or not.

GSP is a program of the US government in order to encourage economic development in developing countries, namely by freeing up import duties on thousands of products of those countries, including Indonesia, into the country "Uncle Sam".

Komitmen Indonesia-AS tingkatkan nilai perdagangan

Bahas GSP
