Global Economy Slows in 2019 PDF Print E-mail

Labor-intensive industries in West Java are vulnerable to the global economic slowdown which is projected to occur in 2019. Governments working with industry need to make efforts so that manufacturing growth can be maintained and avoid new unemployment.

The Chairman of the Indonesian Employers Association (Apindo) in West Java, Dedy Widjaja, said several countries experienced a slowdown in economic growth such as the United States and China. These conditions affect overall global economic growth. Moreover, China and the United States are the main trading partners for Indonesia.

"The country has a large economic impact on the global like China 30 percent, and the United States 40 percent, as well as Europe. Indonesia will certainly miss it, it is impossible to avoid (the impact of economic slowdown)," said Dedy

He said, the economic slowdown had reduced purchasing power so that global consumption would decline. This condition certainly affects the demand for exported goods from Indonesia.

While specifically for West Java, currently more rely on the manufacturing industry sector in exporting. This is mainly labor-intensive industries such as textiles and textile products, as well as footwear.

According to Dedy, the government needs to maintain the pace of growth of this labor-intensive industry even though it is vulnerable to the impact of the global economic slowdown. Because this industry has a big impact on the absorption of Indonesian workers, especially West Java. If the industry grows, the unemployment rate can be reduced and purchasing power can be maintained.

He said, one way to maintain the growth of the labor-intensive industry was to put the brakes on the entry of imported goods. Thus, manufacturing production can be absorbed by the domestic market.

Chairman of the Indonesian Textile Association (API) Ajat Sudradjat said that the declining purchasing power caused the export growth of the textile and textile products (TPT) to slow down. Previously, the growth of the textile industry experienced a significant increase in the past two years at 5% in 2017 and 7% in 2018.

"However, in 2019, only a 2 percent increase will be good. Because of this economic slowdown, some branded goods have reduced production," he said.

Not only exports, domestic demand is also predicted to decrease significantly due to weakening purchasing power. "Even so, there is still hope because Indonesia's investment rating has risen. Although these investments mostly penetrate by reforming technology towards industry 4.0," he said.

Ketua Asosiasi Pengusaha Indonesia (Apindo) Jawa Barat, Dedy Widjaja, mengatakan‎ beberapa negara mengalami perlambatan pertumbuhan ekonomi seperti Amerika Serikat dan Tiongkok.
