Republic of Indonesia Minister of Industry Airlangga Hartarto said the ongoing tariff war between the United States (US) and China had opened up many opportunities for the Republic of Indonesia.

One of them is the removal of the production base for many manufacturing companies from the Bamboo Curtain country to Indonesia, in order to avoid high tariffs imposed by the US.

Airlangga revealed that several global textile and footwear industries are known to consider moving factories from China to Indonesia.

In addition, the party's Golongan Karya politician also stated that Indonesia's iron and steel exports to the US throughout the past year continued to increase, amid the high tariffs applied by US President Donald Trump.

Data from the Ministry of Commerce noted that iron and steel exports to the US rose sharply by 87.7% on an annual basis (yoy) in January-November 2018.

On the other hand, temporary data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) also showed a surge in the export value of aluminum and its derivative products (HS 76) to the US by 55.63% over the past year.

Nevertheless, Airlangga said the protracted trade war had a negative impact on the global economy and the entire country, without exception.

"I think slow growth is currently not good for all countries. This is not good enough for Indonesia to provide employment for our people," Airlangga said.
