World Economic Turmoil Affects Achievement of 2019 Industry Targets PDF Print E-mail

The government targets the growth of the non-oil and gas processing industry this year to reach 5.57%, higher than economic growth of 5.3%. However, this is considered a little difficult to achieve due to external obstacles, such as trade wars.

Senior Economist Raden Pardede said the manufacturing industry this year was overshadowed by a number of challenges. He noted that there were at least three things that were the challenges of achieving this year's industrial targets related to global economic turmoil, plus the inadequate domestic industry readiness.

"The challenges in the industry are affected by three spill over effects, namely financial turmoil, falling commodity prices that affect exports because 60% of Indonesia's exports are still based on commodities, as well as the impact of trade wars," he said.

In facing this, the government is considered necessary to strengthen fiscal policy and regulation of state finances. This should also be followed by efforts to prepare capital and domestic investment.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Industry said this year the industry faces several important issues, such as elections, the Indonesia-EFTA Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IE-CEPA) trade agreement and the hot trade war last year.

The trade war between the US and China which had subsided with the agreement of a 'ceasefire' in the form of postponing the tariff increase agreed upon by the two countries for 90 days since December 3, 2018, in one favor of Indonesia. One of them is the plan to relocate Chinese companies to Indonesia to avoid increasing tariffs.

In addition, Indonesia also has a Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) in 2018, almost above the 50 figure per month, so the trend of expansion is expected to continue this year.

"The upcoming 2019 election will also have an influence on the industrial sector. Industrial sectors such as the Food and Beverage Industry; Textile and Apparel Industry; the Leather, Leather and Footwear Industry have experienced growth, as happened during the 2014 elections," said the Staff Expert of the Minister of Industry for Increasing Use of Domestic Products

Gejolak Ekonomi Dunia Bayangi Pencapaian Target Industri 2019
