The projected growth of the textile industry this year, according to him, will still be the same as last year, which was 5 percent. While the Ministry of Industry also projects the growth of the textile and apparel industry to be 5.61 percent.

Meanwhile, the textile industry continues to work to expand the market to boost exports. The targeted market is America and the European Union. Exports to this country also have challenges.

"The challenge is still the same as the one before, namely market access. We have to open ourselves more to free trade with the European Union and America," Ade explained.

That, he added, considering that the United States and the European Union have been recorded as the biggest brand and market countries in the world.

Regarding the Indonesian Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement with the European Free Trade Association (EFTA / IE-CEPA), Ade said that Indonesia's current competitiveness in entering Europe is still inferior to some Asean countries that have signed a free trade agreement before.

Positive results

However, API is still optimistic that in the next few years the agreement will get positive results for Indonesian garment exports to Europe. "Maybe exports can increase 2-3 times in the next 5 years," he explained.

The Ministry of Industry noted that the national export value of the textile and textile products industry in 2018 reached around 14 billion US dollars, up from the previous year at 12.58 billion US dollars.

The Chairman of the Indonesian Employers' Association (Apindo) in Central Java, Frans Kongi, said that the high number of imports, including cotton, was inseparable from the need for industrial raw materials.

According to him, this would be a positive indicator of the improving condition of the manufacturing industry. "The need for raw materials is indeed quite high, which means the manufacturing industry is running," he explained.

Sekitar 99% Kapas Bahan Baku Industri Tekstil Masih Impor
