The Government Is Requested to Monitor Commodity Prices from Global Impacts PDF Print E-mail

The government needs to increase supervision of commodity prices so as not to get negative effects from various impacts of uncertain global economic conditions. The House of Representatives is pushing for increased oversight of commodity prices because Indonesia is currently constrained by fluctuating commodity prices in the market.

Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Darmin Nasution said the national export performance was still affected by the economic slowdown in countries that had been the main export destination.

He explained that main export destination countries such as China, the United States, Japan, the European Union, and India, were experiencing an economic slowdown due to various reasons. According to him, these conditions make demand from China, which is Indonesia's number one export destination, decline.

In fact, added Darmin, it is not possible to divert exports to other destination countries in a short time, because of specificity of the exported goods.

Previously, a trade war between the United States and China created new opportunities for Indonesia. This can be seen from several Bamboo Curtain manufacturing companies who want to move their production base to Indonesia in order to avoid high tariffs imposed by the US.

"Some global textile and footwear industries are considering moving factories from China to Indonesia," said Minister of Industry Airlangga Hartarto, who was in attendance at the 2019 World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland, recently.

The Minister of Industry conveyed, his side continued to encourage increased investment, especially in sectors that were prioritized in the implementation of industry 4.0 according to the map of Making Indonesia 4.0. The textile and apparel industry is one of the sectors.

The plan, in 2019, there are Chinese investors who will invest Rp10 trillion in the textile industry sector. This investment leads to the development of the midstream or midstream sector, such as spinning, weaving, dyeing and printing.

This shows that Indonesia is considered to be one of the main destination countries for Chinese investors. This is in line with the government's commitment to continue to create a conducive investment climate and provide convenience in the business licensing process.
