At least 150 textile experts from various parts of the country gathered in Jogja at the IVth Congress of the Indonesian Textile Association (IKATSI), at the Quality Hotel, Depok, Sleman. In the congress the experts agreed to discuss various issues in the textile industry in Indonesia while providing recommendations to the government.

Organizing Committee of the IKATSI Congress IV Sukirman explained that the activity was attended by experts and textile practitioners from all over Indonesia. Although the main agenda of the congress was to determine the general chairperson, at the meeting also discussed various issues related to textiles as well as finding solutions.

Sukirman did not dismiss, there were still many textile problems. Starting from the flood of imports, so that national textiles cannot compete well until textiles are currently not in favor of universities. Even though universities have an important role in producing human resources. Because with the presence of competent workforce in the textile sector, the industry will be able to survive.

"The government must limit imports, then spur the development of textile technology. So far from the education side it has not worked well, experts are still minimal, concerns about developing textile education are not in favor of universities," he explained.

Sukirman added that the congress would also provide recommendations to the government regarding clothing. According to him, currently there is a need for laws relating to clothing. So far, clothing is not well protected by the government so that in the future it must be encouraged to have such protection.

Special Staff of the Minister of Industry Beni Sutrisno who attended  opening of the congress appreciated  gathering of hundreds of textile experts. The meeting was expected to produce a good idea for the textile industry in the future. Until now  textile industry provides most employment opportunities in Indonesia. "Indeed, experts have never been able to collect this much. This textile is very broad, so there must be collaboration between experts and industry, on the basis of data collaboration and so on, because the world has continued to change, if we don't innovate, we can die," he said.

In the congress there was also a seminar entitled Transformation of the Indonesian Textile Experts Association in  Era of the Industrial Revolution by presenting a number of speakers, one of them from Sritex.

Chair of IKATSI Redma Gita stated that in the history of industrial development, textiles have always been a pioneering industry and ushered people in better lives. Textiles also lead the nation towards a better industry. "Experts who have prepared themselves to provide service in the textile sector cannot be separated from their role in the development of the industry," he said.
