Minister of Industry Airlangga Hartarto is optimistic that there will be an increase in exports of national footwear products to USD6.5 billion in 2019 and to USD10 billion in the next four years.

"Moreover, Indonesia has signed the CEPA with Australia and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA). This is the potential to expand the export market for our manufactured products, "he said

The Minister of Industry explained, the footwear industry was being prioritized because of its development as an export-oriented labor-intensive sector. "Together with the textile and clothing industry, the footwear industry is also prepared to enter the industrial era of 4.0 so that it is more globally competitive and exports rise. "PT KMK Global Sports in Cikupa, Tengerang is one model that applies future of production," he said.

Previously, the footwear industry was one of the mainstay manufacturing sectors that was able to provide a large contribution to the national economy. This is reflected in the growth of the leather industry group, leather goods and footwear which reached 9.42 percent in 2018, a significant increase compared to 2017 at around 2.22 percent. Last year's achievement exceeded national economic growth at 5.17 percent.

"Then, national footwear exports also increased by 4.13 percent, from 2017 at USD4.91 billion to USD5.11 billion in 2018," said Minister of Industry Airlangga Hartaro during a working visit at PT KMK Global Sports in Cikupa, Tengerang , Banten.

Airlangga stressed that the government continues to make strategic policies to encourage the footwear industry in Indonesia to increase its production capacity so that it can meet domestic needs while becoming an import substitute or filling the export market.

CEO of PT. KMK Global Sports, C.K Song said, until now the company has absorbed a workforce of 15,655 people. The company which has 30 production lines is able to produce up to 1.2 million pairs of Nike brand sports shoes and 300 thousand pairs of Converse shoes every month.

All products are exported to various countries. Its production continues to increase, in 2017 it reached 18.7 million pairs, equivalent to USD234.3 million. "For more than 25 years through 11 companies, which are located in the regions of Serang, Tangerang, Jakarta, Sukabumi and Salatiga, we are committed to investing in Indonesia," he said.

According to Song, PT. KMK Global Sports and all Pou Chen Group investments in Indonesia have contributed to improving the performance of the domestic footwear industry by producing 120 million pairs of shoes per year or 11.08 percent of the total national shoe production.

"In total, we employ as many as 150,000 people or 18.3 percent of the total workforce in the footwear industry and contribute to exports valued at USD1.35 billion or 26.42 percent of national footwear exports," he said.

Meanwhile, Nike Indonesia's President Director Joe Warren stated, he wanted to continue to spur the capacity of footwear companies in Indonesia that produce Nike shoes. This is to meet the increasing export market.

"We appreciate some very advanced and innovative companies such as KMK, which are reflected in the machine production process and management of its leadership. We also thank to Indonesian government for signing  cooperation agreement, such as with Australia, and we hope to be developed with the European Union, "he said.

Chairperson of the Indonesian Footwear Association (APRISINDO) Eddy Widjanarko believes that the footwear industry in Indonesia will grow and be competitive. This is in line with the government's efforts to create a conducive investment climate and the application of industry 4.0.

"The shoe industry is very suitable to be developed in Indonesia and will continue to be the mainstay sector of the future. We see exports will increase this year as additional investment enters Indonesia, "he said.
