The Indonesian Textile Association (API) asked the government to develop cotton farming. This step aims to optimize the domestic textile industry.

"The current condition of our fiber needs can be met from two things, namely artificial fibers and nature. The cheapest fiber is cotton," said Deputy Chairman of Central Java API Lilik Setiawan in Solo.

He said, other types of natural fibers that can be used include bamboo fiber and pineapple fiber. However, the two types of fiber are still rarely used because they require high production costs.

"Therefore, inevitably we have to go back to cotton fiber. On the other hand we also have to open up that domestic cotton needs are only met by world cotton producers," he said.

He said several foreign countries that are big producers of cotton include the United States, Australia, Bangladesh, Pakistan, India and China.

"Others are small. We as a country that produces export foreign exchange, namely oil and gas and non-oil and gas from textiles and textile products must start thinking about this condition," he said.

Moreover, he said, currently 100 percent of domestic textile raw material needs are still met by imports. Related to this, he said, cotton can actually be developed in Indonesia, one of which is Selayar Islands Regency, South Sulawesi Province.

"The Selayar Islands are about 35 minutes from Makassar by airplane," he said.

He said in the land that is contoured up and down and rocky, it turns out that cotton plants can grow well.

"However, the problem is that there is no interference from the government in its development, until finally it is abandoned. Though cotton is one of the best there, it used to be used for uniforms for Dutch troops," he said.

Seeing this potential, he hopes the government can immediately manage it optimally, considering that Indonesia has two advantages, namely extensive land and affordable labor tariffs.
