The booming business at the time of Ramadan will be different for the domestic textile industry. The Indonesian Textile Association (API) predicts the textile industry tends to be sluggish this time compared to the previous year.

"It is projected to decline by 40% compared to last year," explained Ade Sudrajat Usman, Chair of the Indonesian Textile Association (API).

He added, the domestic market was flooded with textile products from abroad, one of which was textile products purchased online. Ade said the import duty limit for goods purchased online was overvalued.

Consumers will be subject to import duties if shopping is above US $ 75 or equivalent to Rp. 1.08 million if using the exchange rate based on Bank Indonesia Jakarta Interbank Spot Dollar Rate (Jisdor) worth Rp.14.469

According to Ade, this regulation is considered too loose. He compared with neighboring countries such as Singapore and Malaysia which applied the import duty limit for online goods in the range of Rp. 200,000 if they were denominated in rupiah.

The government needs to take step for protecting the domestic market. "Implementing  kind of market protection, both anti-dumping and safeguards. As long as it is permitted by the WTO, it should be able to be implemented," suggested Ade.

He added, things like this need to be resolved immediately so as not to adversely affect the textile trade and industry in the future.
