The Textile Industry is in the Spotlight, Still Sunset? PDF Print E-mail

The textile and textile products (TPT) industry in the country is in spotlight after the strongest suspicion of failing to pay Duniatex bonds is sticking to the public. Beyond that problem, the textile industry is also affected by trade disputes between the United States and China that have significantly affected the textile industry in Indonesia.

Economists say that the textile industry must begin to improve by diversifying products and targeting new segments in order to survive.

Based on S & P records, the new 25% import duty imposed by US for imported products from China, including textiles, has made textile producers from China relocate their sales to more friendly countries like Indonesia. This has happened since May 2019.

The onslaught of products from China makes the domestic textile market flooded with oversupply, so prices fall. At the same time, S & P noted that the consumption of the Indonesian people was relatively weak.

Executive Director of the Institute for Development of Economics and Finance (INDEF) Enny Sri Hartati stated that sectorally, the textile industry in the country has experienced a slowdown in the last five years.

Companies engaged in this sector, must begin to expand into the apparel industry which has high added value. This, he said, could also apply to Duniatex Group.

"If Duniatex does not enter the apparel industry, downstream can be (affected by a trade war) because it has lost competition with China," Enny said

Lana Soelistianingsih, Lecturer at the Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Indonesia said something similar. Trade war can indeed be one of the factors causing the textile industry to be increasingly depressed. However, on the other hand, companies can also take advantage of the trade war by producing high-quality textile products and targeting the high-end market.

"Textiles have actually improved, only the sector is already sunset, with trade war it should be able to take advantage of that opportunity by finding new segments," said Lana
