The Indonesian Filament Yarn and Fiber Producers Association (ASyFI) said the potential change in the status of the domestic textile and textile product (TPT) industry to become net importers is getting bigger this year.

"Because we indicated that many imported goods were under invoices. Data from the trade map is always different from BPS [Central Statistics Agency], "said ASyFI Secretary General Redma Wirawasta.

He said the best scenario of the textile industry's net export value at the end of this year was to fall back 21.87% to US $ 2.5 billion.

Based on data from the Indonesian Textile Association (API), the export value performance of the textile industry has continued to increase since 2016 around 5% -6%. However, the net exports of the textile industry have been running low since 2015. Meanwhile, the net export value of the textile industry in the past year was corrected 14.22% to US $ 3.2 billion.

The depletion of net export value was caused by the import trend of the textile industry which continued to increase every year. Meanwhile, the value of imports last year grew 13.86% to US $ 10.02 billion.

Redma explained that the China TPT export data to Indonesia in 2018 was US $ 1 billion more than Indonesia's import data from China. He suspected that the difference also occurred in several other countries such as India, Vietnam, and Thailand.

According to him, it is important to stop the import of TPT considering that local producers have not been able to release production stock at all. If the import termination is granted for 3 months, he said, the stock of local manufacturers will only be able to get out of industrial warehouses.

"If it is not stopped within the next 6 months many companies will be killed," he said.

Previously, API Secretary General Ernovian G. Ismy said that TPT export growth in January-July did not necessarily become a positive signal for the textile industry. Ernovian was worried that even though the garment industry recorded a positive performance, the textile industry's balance sheet that had so far advanced in the red zone could make the net exports of the textile industry decline. He hopes the stakeholders remain alert to the condition of the local textile industry.
