Chairman of the Indonesian Textile Association (API) Ade Sudrajat will propose a safeguard tariff for imported textile products of 2.5% -18%. This proposal is to protect domestic textile products from the invasion of imported textiles, including from China, the impact of a trade war with the United States.

"The tariff form should be like a pyramid. The smallest upstream industry is at least 2.5% and the biggest downstream is 18%," said Ade.

Ade added, his party planned to submit the safeguard tariff to the government in September. The tariff is expected to apply not only to textile products from China, but from all other countries.

Ade assessed the risk of flooding of imported textile products since the trade war took place. Moreover, China depreciated the Yuan, although depreciation was claimed by the Chinese central bank as a market mechanism, not because of manipulation.

Ade Said depreciation of the yuan makes Chinese products have a higher competitiveness than local products because the price is getting cheaper. Therefore, he considered the need to protect domestic textile production. "Like it or not, we must protect the domestic market," he said.

Previously, the international rating agency Moody's predicted that China's yarn, fabric and garment products would enter Indonesia a lot. The reason, US President Donald Trump applies import duty tariffs for textile products from China by 25%. Meanwhile, the tariff imposed by Indonesia is around 10% -15%.

With these tariff differences, Moody's sees an opportunity for Beijing to shift its textile products to Southeast Asia, including Indonesia. This will make excess supply of domestic textiles, prices fall, and hit the manufacturing sector.
