Strengthening R&D in the TPT Sector PDF Print E-mail

Strengthening research and development (research & development / R&D) in the textile and Indonesian textile products (TPT) sector is urgently needed to be realized in order to increase profitability.

The Secretary General of the Ministry of Industry Achmad Sigit Dwiwahjono said the strengthening had to start immediately because so far it had been an obstacle. So far, the profits in the textile sector are owned by the brand owner.

That is because TPT sector actors cannot yet align their products with the wishes of brand owners. With R&D, he explained, TPT businesses could directly provide products that were in line with the final needs of brand holders.

"The profit owned by the textile world is almost 85 percent owned by brand owners, not industries. Now, this [strengthening of R&D] we must start, "he said in the Multi Stakeholder Forum titled 'Efforts to Optimize the Use of Domestic Raw Materials for Indonesian TPT Products', in Pelalawan, Riau, Friday (6/9/2019).

Moreover, explained Sigit, the government has provided special facilities, in the form of super tax deduction aka super deduction tax. The incentive policy is contained in Government Regulation (PP) No. 45/2019 concerning Calculation of Taxable Income and Payment of Income Tax in the Current Year.

The regulation, issued in the middle of the year, provides institutions with a tax deduction of up to 300 percent to facilitate vocational education and conduct research and development related to their business.

"This is an effort to increase the budget of R&D funds in a company," he said.

Chairman of the Indonesian Textile Association (API) Ade Sudrajat also acknowledged that the strengthening of R&D must be carried out in a sustainable manner. The move is important to support the optimization of domestic raw materials with the jargon 'Everything Indonesia'.

The presence of government incentives, continued Ade, is the first step to encourage the expansion of the textile industry.

"Continuous R&D is the key to the success of everything in Indonesia. Must hit according to the wants and needs of the market or create that market. It needs deeper R&D, "he explained.
