APR Commitment to Using Domestic Raw Materials PDF Print E-mail
Written by Maizer
Monday, 09 September 2019
Asian Pacific Rayon (APR) together with the government, business players, and fashion industry players are committed to advancing the Indonesian textile industry through the use of domestic raw materials.

Located at the Hotel Unigraha, Pangkalan Kerinci, Riau. Friday, September 6, 2019 several textile industry players met. Present were Secretary General of the Ministry of Industry Achmad Sigit, Chair of the Indonesian Textile Association (API) Ade Sudrajat, Secretary General of the Indonesian Filament Yarn and Fiber Producers (APSyFI) Redma Gita, Asia Pacific Rayon (APR) Director Basrie Kamba, representative designer at Indonesia Fashion Chambers Yufie Safitri and Iwan Toha and various other stakeholders.

This commitment marks the reform of Indonesia's textile and textile product management (TPT) system, which has been acting independently. "Actually, the management of textiles in Indonesia is quite good, it's just that upstream and downstream often move on their own. While everyone is present here, hopefully there is an understanding," Ahmad Sigit said.

He further mentioned that the true textile industry is one of the priorities of the Indonesian industry 2020-2024. He mentioned that the trade war that was taking place between the United States and China had to be circumvented so that it could benefit Indonesia.

At present Indonesia still cannot talk much in the arena of the international textile industry, currently Indonesia has only a 1.8% market share of the international textile market. Sad because Indonesia is a very potential textile market. Until now the Indonesian market is still dominated by imported products reaching 890 thousand tons of imported fabrics versus 500 thousand tons of export garments. This number has not yet been exacerbated by goods entering through unregistered gray lines.

One such improvement effort is to use domestic textile raw materials, one of which is rayon or viscose. The use of rayon is highly recommended because it is a natural material so that it can support eco-fashion, and sustainable fashion. Seeing the potential of Indonesia's forests it is not impossible for Indonesia to increase its market share to 10% in the international textile market.

"We also encourage the use of domestic raw materials for the textile industry, such as rayon fiber as an alternative raw material besides cotton and polyester as an effort to reduce import dependency," Ahmad Sigit said.

This was greatly appreciated by textile business players who stated that viscose rayon which is biodegradable and relatively low production prices could be one of the motors of the Indonesian textile industry.

In the future, the use of rayon is not only for the daily clothing industry but also for specific products such as sports or medical clothing.

At the end of the session the stakeholders signed a multi-stakeholder charter forum on Optimizing the Use of Domestic Raw Materials for the Indonesian TPT Industry led by Ahmad Sigit Representing the Ministry of Industry.
