RI's Textile Exports to the US Increase by 30 Percent PDF Print E-mail

Chairperson of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry or Kadin Rosan Roeslani said the garment and textile industry in Indonesia is likely to grow rapidly in the next five years. It is noted that if the US-China trade war situation which continues to occur today can be utilized.

Rosan even believes that in the next five years, exports of the two products can grow up to four times. This condition occurred because Indonesia gradually began to replace China as a supplier of garment and textile products to the United States after the trade war broke out.

That, Rosan said, was reflected in the increased value of exports of the two products to Uncle Sam. "I spoke with the garment, textile association, this year we enjoyed our exports rising 25-30 percent to the United States. We are increasingly competitive," Rosan said in a discussion titled "Economic Outlook" at Balai Kartini.

Rosan said, in 2018, exports of Indonesian garment and textile products as a whole would reach US $ 10 billion. Whereas in 2019, garment exports will increase by US $ 3 billion to US $ 13 billion.

Even so, Indonesia is still inferior to Vietnam, whose textile and garment exports have now reached US $ 35 billion or tripled in a year. Vietnam first exploited the situation of the trade war by attracting China to relocate its factory there.

China relocated its factories to a number of countries, including Vietnam, because the US hit it with entry fees. The US some time ago set the cost of entry of merchandise from China rose by 25 percent. In the midst of the escalation of the trade war, China then revoked 33 of its companies from the US in retaliation.

The transfer of Chinese factories to countries like Vietnam succeeded in making their industries successful. However, of the 33 companies that were relocated, none entered Indonesia.

Rosan said that investment into the country was considered difficult because it was hampered by a number of things, such as the complexity of the bureaucracy. "Why doesn't investment enter Indonesia, it's because the bureaucracy is prolonged. What we need to protect is purchasing power if we want to reach 5 percent," he said.
