The textile and apparel industry is the manufacturing sector which recorded the highest growth in the third quarter of 2019 of 15.08 percent. This achievement exceeded 5.02 percent economic growth in the same period.

"Based on the Making Indonesia 4.0 road map, the textile and clothing industry as one of the five manufacturing sectors that are being prioritized for development, especially in readiness to enter the industrial era 4.0," said Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita in Jakarta.

Minister of Industry, Agus asserted, the national textile and textile product (TPT) industry is increasingly competitive in the global arena because it already has high competitiveness. This is encouraged because the industrial structure has been integrated from upstream to downstream.

"The glorious performance of the textile industry is in line with the high demand in the domestic market, which is reflected in an increase in production in the textile and apparel production centers, especially in the West Java region," he said.

Agus said, his party was also proactive in spurring exports of national textile products. Because, aside from being a labor-intensive sector, the textile industry has an export orientation. Therefore, several strategic steps have been taken, including encouraging the expansion of market access and restructuring of machinery and equipment.

The regulation will be applied by imposing import duties on textile products originating from abroad. The aim is to become a stronghold from the import of textile products so that they are considered able to protect the national industry.

Previously, data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) showed that the production of the apparel industry experienced a significant growth of 15.29 percent. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Industry is targeting that exports from the national textile industry will penetrate up to USD 15 billion throughout 2019.

Other manufacturing sectors, which were also able to surpass economic growth in the third quarter of 2019, included the food and beverage industry growing by 8.33 percent. This is supported by the increase in CPO production which is in line with the increase in domestic CPO consumption to meet B20 policy needs.

Furthermore, the paper industry, paper products, printing and reproduction of recorded media grew significantly by 6.94 percent, in line with foreign demand reflected by an increase in exports. Next, the furniture industry grew by 6.93 percent because it was supported by foreign demand reflected by an increase in exports.

The Textile and Textile Product Industry (TPT) in the country has the potential to rise again amid the tensions of the trade wars of the two giant nations of the world economy, the United States and China. Opportunities for the rise of the domestic textile industry as safeguard regulations are signed.

The regulation will be applied by imposing import duties on textile products originating from abroad. The aim is to become a stronghold from the import of textile products so that they are considered able to protect the national industry.

"The safeguard has been signed by the Minister of Trade. So, with these rules there will be a number of components of the textile industry that will be given safeguards, "said Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita in Jakarta.

Minister of Industry Agus revealed, with the signing of the regulation, it is hoped that it can continue to boost the growth of the textile industry which is one of the priority sectors according to the Making Indonesia 4.0 road map. "The regulation will be effective immediately since it was issued by the Ministry of Trade," he said.

To ensure that safeguards run optimally, the Ministry of Finance Customs and Excise is also involved. In this case, the Customs and Excise is tasked with overseeing the entry of imported TPT goods, especially products recorded in safeguards. "Later customs will really work in accordance with what is in the rules," he explained.

With the existence of safeguard rules, the Minister of Industry is optimistic, the textile industry in the country will increasingly grow and continue to make a significant contribution to the national economy.
