In the middle of the onslaught of imports of textile raw materials entering Central Java, a number of silkworm cultivators in Central Java continue to innovate. This was done to reduce the amount of imported textile raw materials such as cotton and silk fibers, according to Central Java BPS data as of November 2019 reaching 830 million US Dollars.

The innovation was made through the development of silk fibers producing silk fibers that produce silkworms duan.

Even though it cannot be mass produced yet, silk from rubber leaf caterpillars has begun to be in great demand.

According to Murkadani, a cassava silk leaf cultivator, the production of cassava silk leaves is never enough to meet market demand.

Although less shiny, silk from cassava leaves is better, besides being smooth and soft when made for fashion materials.

"Regarding price, silk fibers from rubber cassava leaf caterpillars can be 20 to 30 percent cheaper than imported silk fibers," he said.

He hoped, silk fibers from cassava leaf caterpillars could be a solution to dependence on imported silk fibers that are needed by the textile industry in Central Java.

"To suppress imported fashion materials, especially silk fiber, we are trying to work with a number of farmers in Kulonprogo, Yogyakarta, Wonogiri, North Kalimantan, and Malang.

We give silkworm seeds to farmers and provide assistance, when we buy silkworms, we harvest silk cocoons.

Hopefully this method can reduce the dependence of imported silk fibers, albeit gradually, "he added
