Textile Industry: Prediction There Is No Increase in Demand Before Lebaran This Year PDF Print E-mail

Textile and Textile Product Industry (TPT) players stated that before the Eid this year, there was no increase in demand for domestic products. The Indonesian Textile Association (API) states that the demand for ready-to-wear clothes has usually started to increase from 4 months to 6 months before Ramadan.

The association suspects that the surge has not been caused by the large volume of imported fabrics and apparels in industrial warehouses.

"Maybe the manufacturer is still doubtful whether the condition has improved because until now there has been no surge in demand. We are still seeing if there is an upward trend in the import of apparel in January-February, "said Secretary General of West Java API Rizal Rakhman.

Rizal said that usually the demand jumped around 50% -100% close to Ramadan. API Chairperson Ade Sudrajat said that his party was now worried that TPT imports would change from fabric to apparel. If this happens, he said, importers will boost import volume about 2 weeks before Lebaran.

"So it must be strict in customs inspection. From the manufacturer, the order is good, but has not fully recovered. We are waiting for [orders for Eid], but not as optimistic as ever, "he told Bisnis.

In order to protect the domestic market, Ade said he would propose safeguards at several apparel and garment tariff posts. According to him, the submission was based on a surge in imports in previous years.

Besides being filled with imported goods, Ade said the low demand approaching the month of Ramadan was also influenced by the low purchasing power of consumers. "Buying power will not be better than 2019."
