Pandemic Corona Hit the Textile Industry, Laborers Threatened Layoffs PDF Print E-mail

The corona virus pandemic or Covid-19 hit the textile and textile product (TPT) industry in Indonesia. The decreasing demand for textiles has an impact on the disruption of the company's cash flow and the reduced level of industrial utilization. Chairperson of the Indonesian Textile Association (API) Jemmy Kartiwa said, the textile industry began to be corrected as the impact of corona and social distancing policy.

Sluggish demand, according to him began to be seen from the lack of visitors to the Tanah Abang textile market. Not only that, many textile product orders have been postponed or canceled shipments in the export market.

If this condition continues to be protracted and allowed to happen, coupled with the continued weakening of the rupiah exchange rate and competition with imported products, it is feared to have an impact on termination of employment. "Layoffs are a dilemma decision. We avoid layoffs. Until today the industry is still running full. But anticipation if the emergency status increases," he said.

Therefore, he hopes that there will be government intervention so that the textile industry can continue operations amid the current economic challenges. "Frankly, all industries need a deep breath, to avoid layoffs. So we want to ask for relaxation," he said.

Relaxation requested by the industry includes tariff protection through safeguard policies for the protection of upstream / downstream industries. Then ask for an acceleration in the decline in industrial gas prices of US $ 6 per mmbtu, relief of electricity tariffs and so on.

As is known, the textile industry is one of the leading industries in the country. This industry recorded the highest growth in the third quarter of 2019 of 15.08%, growing above the same period last year's economic growth of 5.02%. However, the textile industry also often competes with imported products. Indonesia Association of textile experts throughout (Ikatsi) revealed, the performance of foreign trade in textiles and textile products (TPT) in 2018 was the worst in history.

This can be seen from the export growth which is much lower than imports. Noted TPT exports grew by 0.9%, while imports went far by 13.9%. As a result, growth in the value of the TPT trade balance slowed 25.6% or the lowest since 2008. Details about textile imports are illustrated in the following box.
