Critical Textile Industry Because Covid-19 and Shortcut Policies PDF Print E-mail

The plague of covid-19 in Indonesia has devastated the textile and textile product (TPT) industries. Especially with the declining purchasing power of the people making this industry increasingly on the edge. Until now, several textile, garment and convection industries in West and East Java have started to stop operations due to very low demand.

Chairperson of the West Java Indonesian Textile Association (API) Chandra Setiawan acknowledged that when the plague in the Covid-19 market size in the country declined sharply.

"When Covid-19 started to become an epidemic in Indonesia, the market shrinked very sharply," Chandra said.

He hopes the government will not fail to focus by opening the import faucet wider by providing import relaxation.

"On the contrary, at this time people need jobs, not need cheap goods to be more consumptive," he explained.

According to Chandra, the government should look at the structure of the national industry or the national supply chain of each industry, before making a policy, and must involve the relevant industry associations to help formulate policies that are right on target.

Furthermore, he revealed that so far in the era of free trade, the government was too focused on consumption so that policies were often taken more towards shortcuts by opening the import tap.

During this time, continued Chandra, the domestic TPT industry has been stuck for too long with a shortcut solution by opening the import tap, so that the domestic industrial sectors did not grow, instead the opposite happened.

"It should be noted that before we can export we must strengthen our domestic control," said Chandra.

"New investment in the TPT industry is very low because entrepreneurs need a good business ecosystem, affordable energy, regulations that are pro to industry and employment creation, and the most important is market guarantees," he explained.

Chandra hopes that at a critical time like now, the state will increasingly protect the domestic market for national interests (national interest) as what other countries have done so far.

"Reduce our dependence on other countries by focusing on the integration of each industry from upstream to downstream, import substitution and employment creation in our own country," concluded Chandra.
