API: Manufacturing PMI Index Will Continue to Decline Until The PSBB is Revoked PDF Print E-mail

IHS Markit has just reported Indonesia's manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) in April at the level of 27.5. This position declined considerably compared to the March index, which was 43.5. In fact, this manufacturing PMI position shows the lowest performance in history.

This sharp decline in the manufacturing PMI is nothing but the impact caused by the Corona virus outbreak which affected the industrial sector. As a result, many factory closures and a drop in demand, output and new demand.

In response, Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Indonesian Textile Association (API) Ade Sudrajat said, the performance of the manufacturing industry will continue to decline until the large-scale social restriction policy (PSBB) is lifted.

For this reason, according to Ade, it will take a relatively longer time for the manufacturing industry to make adjustments to market conditions. That is, it could be that until the end of this year the PMI index will also continue to decline.

Ade continued, impact of weakening of PMI index will massively increase the unemployment rate. Moreover, this decline recorded the worst weakness in Indonesia's manufacturing performance.

According to him, to anticipate manufacturing performance does not fall much deeper, the government needs to provide incentives in the form of interest subsidies.

Furthermore, Ade said the prospect of Indonesian manufacturing in the next year could begin to improve. Provided that the government and industry can work together in solving various problems that arise due to the Corona outbreak.

Not only that, the government's main focus must also be on strengthening the domestic market with various protections, as well as aggressively working on the export market.
