Textile Association Asks the Government to Apply Safeguard Garment Products PDF Print E-mail

The Indonesian Association of Filament Fibers and Yarn Producers (APSyFI) urges the government to immediately enact the application of security measures or safeguards for garment products.

Because the imported garment products continue to flood the domestic market. This makes the textile industry and textile products (TPT) especially the chaotic garment sector.

Based on data from the Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) from 2015 to 2019, garment imports continue to increase. The value of imports in 2015 reached US $ 7.31 billion and in 2019 the value of garment imports touched US $ 8.3 billion.

APSyFI Secretary General, Redma Gita Wirawasta said, the application of safeguards for garment products was very urgent to be done so that the domestic textile industry would not be degraded.

"We ask that this garment safeguard can be carried out quickly, because the stock of goods in China, India, Vietnam and Bangladesh have accumulated the results of canceling buyers' orders in the US and EU," Redma said

"If we are slow, after Covid-19, goods from the four countries will enter Indonesia very easily (because they are considered leftovers)," he added.

Redma hopes that the relevant ministries will also encourage this safeguard. Because, he explained, after the Covid-19 pandemic, Indonesia needed activities to absorb a large number of workers so that the economy would soon recover and not cause further social problems.

"This is indeed not an easy job, because imported mafias still have an influence on influencing policies in the interests of imports. These mafias will try to frustrate or at least influence safeguard policies to be imposed with the lowest possible import duty level," Redma said.

The same thing was also expressed by the Director General of Small and Medium Industries and Miscellaneous (IKMA) Ministry of Industry, Gati Wibawaningsih.

He considered that safeguards must be carried out with the support of all parties, namely the government, associations, and garment businesses.

"We must arrange and support together. The government, associations and the business world will join hands to realize this safeguard," he said in a webinar on the Safeguard Implementation Plan for Garment Products.

Therefore, continued Gati, the application of security measures or safeguards for garments was considered urgent so that local products could compete with imported goods whose prices were relatively cheaper.

Separately, the Chairperson of the West Java Indonesian Textile Association (API) Chandra Setiawan appreciated all the efforts and support from the Ministry of Industry.

"This is very good, in this case the government is supporting and supporting," explained Chandra.

According to him, government support is very important. "It is very important that the government is present. So, we are not walking on foot," he concluded.
