Players in the textile and product industry revealed the massive import of apparel to Indonesia during the Covid-19 pandemic. Even important clothing labels are from foreign countries, including China.

Chairman of the Indonesian Textile Association (API) Jemmy Kartiwa Sastraatmaja predicts that by the end of this month, more apparel products will enter. Based on the information he received, next year's Eid products such as robes, koko shirts, will increasingly enter the domestic market.

"Only this year industrial textiles do not feel the Eid al-Fitr party. If the regulations don't come from now, next year it will be missed again. Goods filled in December, January, March. If imports do not close soon, it will enter, we will become spectators again," called Jemmy

Jemmy estimates that important clothing that enters control of 50% of the domestic market, which generally comes from China, especially for the traditional market segment. He gave an example of how these items are easily found in traditional markets.

"In Tanah Abang, Mangga Dua foreign language hangtags (price tags / clothing labels). The rule is that all products entering Indonesia must have instructions in Indonesian, there is no such thing," he explained.

After entering the new normal period, imported goods re-enter after the beginning of the pandemic, it was quite difficult to enter. Moreover, since the beginning of the year many garments have been producing clothes in preparation for this summer. Unfortunately it was not absorbed due to the Covid-19 pandemic that came suddenly.

BPS import data for July 2020, shows that knitted fabric products are indeed included in the top three important values of non-oil and gas products that enter the Indonesian market. Meanwhile, June data shows that clothing imports are also still happening. For example, in clothing and clothing accessories, knitwear or reference imports reached US $ 20.58 million.

Before there was a report from API about the invasion of apparel during the pandemic, several years ago until 2019, the Indonesian market was invaded by upstream textile products such as yarn and fabric. Then there is the import goods protection policy, namely safeguards. Meanwhile, imported apparel products do not have a safeguard protection policy.
