The use of electricity from PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) by industrial groups is increasing. It is noted that a number of industrial sectors have taken advantage of the electricity supply from PLN, such as the automotive, cement, smelter and textile industries. Chairman I of the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (Gaikindo) Jongkie Sugiarto revealed that some of the automotive industry has indeed utilized electricity from PLN. "They have their own power plant (but) only for standby or emergency," said Jongki, Tuesday (5/4).

Meanwhile, Director of Administration, Corporate and External Relations of PT Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN) Bob Azzam explained that the company uses electricity supply by PLN. "Even if we do something ourselves, it is in order to reduce emissions and (increase) new and renewable energy such as cogen (by) using gas and solar panels," explained Bob.

Bob continued, for the year 2023 it is expected that 10% of the company's energy sources can be supplied from NRE.

Meanwhile, the Corporate Secretary of PT Pan Brothers Tbk (PBRX) Iswar Deni explained that the company currently utilizes 100% of the electricity supply from PLN. At the same time the company is developing a PLTS Roof project. "The target for the roof solar panels for the second quarter of 2022 will be operational with a capacity of up to 2,554 kilo Watt peak (kWp)," said Deni.

Previously, the General Chair of the Indonesian Filament Yarn and Fiber Producers Association (APSyFI) Redma Gita Wirawasta revealed that currently the textile and textile product (TPT) industry has generally switched to using PLN electricity. "Currently our members have turned off the power plant and switched to PLN," explained Redma, recently.

Redma said that one of the factors driving the transition was the difficulty of the textile industry in meeting the supply of coal for its own power plants.

Meanwhile, Deputy Chairperson of the Association of Indonesian Processing and Refining Industry Companies (AP3I) Jonathan Handoyo said that in general the coal needs of the smelter industry are quite diverse. "In average, nickel (smelters) already use electricity (from PLN) and do not use coal (self-generating) anymore," Jonathan said, Monday (28/3).

Jonathan continued, the use of coal for the smelter industry is shrinking every year. One of the factors is that the industry has begun to shift to using electricity services from PLN.

The Executive Director of the Institute for Essential Services Reform (IESR) Fabby Tumiwa revealed a number of reasons why the industry no longer uses its own generators and switches to PLN services.

According to him, this transition depends on the type of power plant used by the industry and the cost of fuel that must be spent. "For some industries that use PLTU with coal prices using market prices, it is much cheaper to use electricity from PLN," said Fabby, Wednesday (30/3).

Fabby said that with the price of coal for electricity being pegged at US$ 70 per ton, there is a guarantee that the price of fuel costs will be cheaper if using electricity from PLN. Fabby added, for the Rooftop PLTS user industry, electricity tariffs could be 5% to 15% cheaper than the industrial tariff by PLN.

In addition, a number of industries generally intend to use new and renewable energy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This is to ensure product competitiveness, especially for the export market.

Fabby said, there are a number of industries that have started to switch to using electricity from PLN, including the textile and apparel industry, the manufacturing industry, the cement industry to the mining industry.
